Located in the La Araucanía region, the University of La Frontera is a public and state higher education institution. It is regarded as one of the top eight universities in Chile based on its high indicators of quality and excellence.

The University of La Frontera was established as an independent institution on 10 March 1981. Its mission is to contribute to the development of its immediate surroundings and to Chile through the generation and transfer of knowledge, the training of professionals and postgraduates, and the cultivation of the arts and culture, while maintaining its commitment to quality and innovation, respect for the individual, nature and cultural diversity, and the construction of a more just and democratic society.

The University of La Frontera offers the widest range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the region, and currently has more than 8,000 students divided between four faculties, 39 courses and a modern complex of 93,000 constructed square metres. It also offers 60 Masters, Doctoral and Medical Specialisation programmes.
